FrogWatch of the Flint Hills
What is FrogWatch
Have a passion for conservation? Want to contribute to ongoing scientific research? Join our local chapter of FrogWatch USA at Sunset Zoo. FrogWatch of the Flint Hills is a citizen-science initiative that empowers community members to learn about their local wetlands and aid in the critical process of identifying local frog and toad species. The data collected by local citizens is shared nationally and influences conservation work. After completing training, volunteers collect data during evenings from February through August. Volunteers must complete one of two training sessions offered each spring comprised of three, 3-hour classes; attendance at all three dates of a session is mandatory.
FrogWatch is a great way for individuals, groups and families to get involved in local conservation efforts. Monitoring occurs after dark, therefore participation may be best suited for those 14 and older.
If you have a preteen excited about conservation, check out our new FrogWatch for Families program! FrogWatch for Families is targeting those 9-13 years of age. We have found that the curriculum is too advanced for our younger audiences and they get bored easily. Please keep this in mind when registering. We do provide study materials that you can share with the whole family! Training will be a family overnight program with camping on zoo grounds. (Due to COVID-19 and the in-person nature of this program, dates for the family training are TBD in 2021)
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates that at least one-third of known amphibian species are threatened with extinction; a rate significantly higher than bird or mammal populations. As a FrogWatch Volunteer, you'll assist with a survey of amphibians. This data will increase our understanding of the local population and its trends, informing future conservation efforts.
